The Spring Checkers project was made from the left-overs from the following 4-patch & Squares Baby Quilt.  I still had eve more 4-patch boxes that I am making into a couple bibs, which hopeful with be completed soon.  I started this following Quilt I think early 2012, but it might have been Fall of 2011...needless to say it has lingered!

I love my Grandma Quilt

This is my 7th finish this year. I only finished 5 UFOs last year so I have already passed that. I'm hoping to at least triple last year's finishes. It's nice to see the UFO bin emptying. I have a stack of unfinished projects on the shelves of one of my bookcases and I also have a clear tub with projects that need  finishing. The ones I want to work on first are stored in the clear tub. When that empties I add more.

This came to me in pieces a year or so ago. One of my neighbors was making this for a family member who was having a little girl. She never finished it so she just went out and bought a blanket for the new baby and passed her UFO along to me.  All the blocks were cut out and the top was around half way sewn together. Her plan was to use a soft pink minky backing and a matching pink store bought satin binding. I finished the top and decided to do some hand quilting in some of the squares . I used embroidery floss and stitched hearts into the I love Grandma squares. I also did some straight line machine stitching in the ditch across the rows as back up. Since the embroidered hearts go out near the edge I couldn't use the satin binding. I couldn't find the right color pink fabric in my stash for the binding so it sat for the past month or so. When I woke up yesterday I remembered I had a box of fabric in my closet that had some pink fabric in it and luckily it matched.

I haven't used minky before but it wasn't too bad. I love how soft it feels but I probably won't use it as a backing again for awhile. I think it would make wonderful stuffed friends though.  The blankie still needs to go through the wash to remove the marking pen but I am waiting until I finish another pink UFO I am working on.  I didn't use any batting for this quilt.

I have started a hope chest for when our kids eventually marry and have children. This quilt will be added to the hope chest after it is washed.

Baby quilt in reds

I think I put this quilt top together in 2011 or it could have been the early part of 2012. Either way, I was in an online class with Bonnie Hunter and this is one of the designs we worked on. A couple years back I bought a mystery box of fabric and there was a couple quart size ziploc baggies crammed full of HSTs. I pulled out a bunch of red ones and added in the dot fabric from my stash and there it sat until recently. I decided to hand quilt this one. I used 3 strands of white or red embroidery floss to make some chunky quilting lines.

Of course my quilt inspector (Whiskers)  needed to check out my quilting stitches.   This is my fourth finish for 2013.

4 Quilt Tops Done

Thank you to Wendy for inviting me to participate in this blog. I just wanted to show you all that this week, I have finished 4 baby quilts for little ones that survived the tornadoes of Alabama (United States) and their families did not.

Having this blog on UFO's helps me to complete my quilts and get rid of some of my stash as I feel accountable to all of you who are working so hard to complete your UFO's.

Simply put, this is a great support group for all of us quilters who say we never have the time to finish anything.

I have found a new home.

If anyone wants to stop by my home blog check out the Quilting Ranny at:

My first finished this year and it is a re-finish

About 5 years ago I made a "Jeu de l'Oie" wall hanging from a pattern in "Marie-Claire Idees" for the birth of my friend's daughter. The "Jeu de l'Oie" is a traditional French board game.
The quilt took a few months to make as I did all the applique in each individual "square" by hand. She received her present when she was about 6-month old.
My friend hanged the quilt in her daughter's bedroom. However they remodelled their house about 2 years ago when baby # 2 was born and the quilt was too big for the new bedroom. As there was quite a large "border" around the quilt, my friend asked if I could trim the quilt to a smaller size. Of course I agreed and took the quilt back to reduce its final size. I took the binding off and trimmed the quilt off last year in the Spring. I then sew the binding back on again. Once the binding was on, I realised that I had stitched it to the back of the quilt rather than the front. I hate unpicking so I decided to try a decorative stitch on the front to finish the binding, also thinking that would be the faster option. Well, it looked awful and I really hated it. I only did half of the side length but the binding was moving slightly and the stitches were not consistant so that meant more unpicking to do :-( I was so annoyed with myself that I put the quilt aside and didn't touch it again until about a month ago when I was determined that the quilt would go back with my friend next time we saw each other (which was planned for last week-end). I took the quilt with me when we travelled back to France for our holidays and spent the journey unpicking my horrible decorative stitch. When that was finally over, I could sew the binding back on, making sure I put it on the front of the quilt this time. I blind stitched it on the way to our week-end and finished it off during the week-end so that I could finally hand it back (about half an hour before we all left).
Anyway, I am really pleased that I could hand it back over to my friend and that meant I could also cross this long-standing UFO off my list.

My First UFO off the list!

Phew....this was a marathon of a quilt.

A friend asked me to make a quilt for her sister who was due with a girl in January....the first time someone would be paying me for a quilt! Of course I left it to the last minute and I made this whole quilt from start to finish in 2 days!

All washed and crinkly it measures 40x52in

It was certainly hard to give this one away!

My friend loved it! Which I was just so relieved about.

Bliss is an absolutely gorgeous fabric line...I might have to make a full size of this quilt for my bed!

Happy Sewing :)

Erin :)
